Train Collision in West Bengal’s Darjeeling District
On Monday, June 17, a collision between a goods train and the stationary Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district resulted in the derailment of three rear coaches. The incident claimed the lives of at least 15 passengers and injured 60 others, according to officials. The toll may rise as rescue operations continue.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties
State and central agencies, along with residents, are working tirelessly to rescue passengers who might still be trapped. Among the deceased are the pilot and co-pilot of the goods train, a senior railway official confirmed. The injured have been transported to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
Collision Details
The derailment occurred near Rangapani station, approximately 30 km from North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri station when the locomotive of the goods train collided with the rear compartments of the Kanchanjunga Express. Two coaches were thrown off the tracks, and another was left precariously hanging with the goods train’s engine beneath it.

Government Response
The Union government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the families of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has traveled to West Bengal to oversee the relief operations.
Preliminary Findings
Initial reports indicate that the passenger train was stationary when the goods train rammed into it from behind. The accident occurred around 9 am as the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was traveling from Agartala to Sealdah. Adverse weather conditions have further complicated rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and condolences on X, stating: “Shocked to learn about a tragic train accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances, and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated.”
