Deepika Padukone Not Returning for Kalki 2
The much-awaited sequel to Kalki 2898 AD has hit an unexpected roadblock with the makers confirming that Deepika Padukone will not be a part of the film. Director Nag Ashwin had already shared that the second installment would take time to begin, owing largely to Prabhas’ hectic schedule. Still, the latest announcement has surprised fans who were eager to see Deepika reprise her role in the futuristic epic.
The first film, Kalki 2898 AD, turned into a historic blockbuster, raking in more than Rs. 1,100 crore at the global box office. Deepika played a central role in the storyline, and her absence is bound to alter the dynamics of the sequel in a big way.
Taking to X, the makers issued an official statement:
“This is to officially announce that Deepika Padukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.”

This decision marks another setback in Deepika’s lineup. Previously, she was supposed to star opposite Prabhas in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, but reports suggest she was dropped after disagreements regarding her preferred eight-hour work shifts.
Her exit from one of the most anticipated sequels in Indian cinema is already creating buzz across the industry. While the makers’ note emphasized the need for dedication and long-term collaboration, it has also sparked discussions on professionalism and expectations from top stars in high-budget projects. For now, fans are left wondering who will step into her place in Kalki 2.
