Mahavatar Narsimha is India’s First ₹100 Cr Animated Blockbuster!
For years, Indian animated films have struggled to make a significant impact at the box office. Most titles found success only on television or OTT platforms, with theatrical releases receiving lukewarm responses. Films like Hanuman (2005) and Roadside Romeo (2008) saw modest success. While Hollywood animations such as Frozen 2 and Incredibles 2 fared better in Indian cinemas but didn’t break records.
That narrative changed with Mahavatar Narsimha, a mythological animated film directed by Ashwin Kumar. Released in multiple Indian languages, the film started with a decent run but witnessed a strong boost in collections during its second weekend. Thanks to glowing word of mouth and robust support from family audiences.
Mahavatar Narsimha is India’s First ₹100 Cr Animated Blockbuster!
By the close of its second weekend, Mahavatar Narsimha had entered the ₹100 crore club. Becoming the first animated film—domestic or international—to achieve this feat solely in India. Until now, Hollywood hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Frozen 2 had managed to cross only the ₹50 crore mark, while the previous highest-grossing Indian animated film, Hanuman, earned just over ₹10 crore.
With momentum on its side, Mahavatar Narsimha is now eyeing the ₹150 crore milestone and could potentially cross ₹200 crore globally. Buoyed by this unprecedented success, production house Hombale Films has revealed plans to expand the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe, with six more films lined up through 2037.
This breakthrough signals a promising new chapter for Indian animation, proving there’s a growing appetite for culturally rooted animated narratives. The phenomenal run of Mahavatar Narsimha might well inspire a wave of ambitious animated films in the country.
