Supreme Court Rejects Apology, Slams Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna for Wilful Disobedience
The Supreme Court Refuses to Accept Baba Ramdev’s Apology in Misleading Advertisements Case
In a decisive stance, the Supreme Court declined to accept the unconditional apology tendered by Baba Ramdev and Patanjali Ayurved MD Acharya Balkrishna in the misleading advertisements case. The court’s strong-worded observations suggested that the apology seemed coerced, coming only when they felt cornered.
Despite Baba Ramdev’s appearance in court and the submission of an affidavit expressing “unconditional and unqualified” apology, the court remained unmoved. Justice Hima Kohli remarked that the apology appeared insincere, indicating a deliberate violation of the undertaking given by the defendants.
The court characterized Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna’s actions as wilful disobedience and emphasized the need for society to recognize the consequences of such conduct. Notably, the court criticized the defendants for sending their affidavits to the media before the court, suggesting a preference for publicity over genuine contrition.

The Supreme Court has scheduled further action against them for April 16, indicating that the matter is far from resolved. Additionally, the court reprimanded Uttarakhand’s state licensing authority officials for their inaction since 2018 regarding complaints against Divya Pharmacy, a concern raised during the proceedings.
In Tuesday’s hearing, Baba Ramdev expressed regret for the lapse and assured the court that such violations would not recur in the future. However, the court remained skeptical, particularly considering the defendants’ history of disregarding court orders.
The court’s insistence on accountability underscores the seriousness with which it views the issue of misleading advertisements. Despite assurances from Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, the court seems determined to ensure compliance with its directives, prioritizing the protection of consumers from deceptive marketing practices.
