Discussing the most important character in “Kalki 2898 AD,” Ashwin highlighted Sumathi, played by Deepika Padukone. He elaborated on her performance in a pivotal scene where she walks through fire, calling it one of his favorites despite the rushed shooting conditions. “It usually happens that some of the most important or magical things in the film happen by chance or in a hurry,” Ashwin remarked. “Watching Deepika walk through that tunnel in the fire, I knew this was going to be special.”

He further emphasized Deepika’s significance to the story, stating, “When we were writing, we discussed this a lot. The easiest answer was, whose character can you remove and the story itself will not remain? That became Deepika’s character because if you remove her character, the story will not remain. Kalki will not remain.”
