Jr NTR to Portray Dadasaheb Phalke in a Biopic?
Jr NTR, who is currently immersed in high-profile projects like War 2, Prashanth Neel’s upcoming film, and Devara 2. Might soon be taking on an unexpected and powerful new role. Buzz from Mumbai media suggests that the star is being considered to lead a biopic based on the life of Indian cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke.
According to these reports, Jr NTR has expressed keen interest in stepping into the shoes of the legendary filmmaker. The biopic is rumored to be backed by filmmaker SS Rajamouli, his son Karthikeya, and Varun Gupta of Max Studios. With the script reportedly completed, insiders reveal that NTR was captivated by the story and gave his approval immediately.
However, bringing Dadasaheb Phalke’s life to the big screen is no small feat. Known for his contributions to cinema rather than mass entertainment. Phalke’s emotional and dramatic journey contrasts sharply with the action-packed roles Jr NTR is usually associated with. Presenting such a profound historical tale with a commercial star poses a unique creative challenge.
Jr NTR to Portray Dadasaheb Phalke in a Biopic?
Dadasaheb Phalke, originally named Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, was born in 1870 and is best known for directing India’s first feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913. Over the course of his career, he created 95 films. His cinematic journey began after a stint as a photographer for the Archaeology Department and a life-changing experience watching Life of Christ in 1910. That viewing ignited his passion for filmmaking.
To make his first film, Phalke made tremendous sacrifices—selling his property, purchasing filmmaking tools, and even traveling to London to buy a camera for five pounds. With the help of a promotional short film, he raised nearly ₹10,000 to kickstart his production journey. His wife, Saraswati Bai, stood by him throughout, even selling her jewelry to support his dream.
Despite his groundbreaking work, Phalke faced a tragic end. He spent his final years in financial hardship, without a permanent home for six years. And passed away due to illness in that very house.
If the biopic does move ahead, it has the potential to be one of the most heartfelt and impactful films in Jr NTR’s illustrious career.
